1 Console: An Introduction Console is a software product that provides real-time and customized monitoring of events in different states for your Enterprise. Console provides drill down, real-time and customized viewing of event states. It allows proactive monitoring for mission critical systems and assures the competitive edge necessary for your success. With an all-in-one group of Telnet, user applications and URLs, Console provides a next generation approach to business critical issues.
Ability to Show Cause, Effect and Recovery Achieving performance and availability in distributed environments requires an integrated approach. With limited time and multiple servers to manage, problems need to be recognized, understood and resolved quickly. To address these challenges and more, the new Console presents the cause of the event, the effect and the possible recovery information in a separate window. This provides the key information you need at your fingertips.
1-3 Benefits Improved Service Level Availability Console’s latest version has been expanded to provide a next generation approach bringing customized viewing of event states and allowing the user to focus on business critical issues. This ensures high system availability and performance through detailed and customized classification of event states. 2 Console: The Interface This chapter provides details about the features available with the Console GUI including the interface components, such as Menus and Toolbar. Figure 2-1 Console GUI 2-1 Console Window The Console window is divided into the following panes. • Management Pane Console’s Management pane is the vertical pane on the left side of the window. This pane displays the Policies tab, which shows the tree-view of all the Active Windows, NonStop Nodes, Policies, Tools and Web Links.
2-2 Menu Bar Figure 2-2 Console Menu Bar The first bar at the top of the Console window is the Menu bar, giving access to various menus. The menus available are: File, Edit, View, Policies, Tools, Window and Help. 2-3 Taskbar Figure 2-3 Console Taskbar The Taskbar is displayed just below the Menu bar on the right side of the Console window. All the minimized windows appear as tabs on the taskbar and correspond to a running application.
2-8 Telnet Toolbar Figure 2-8 Console Telnet Toolbar The Telnet toolbar is displayed only when the Telnet session is started. It is displayed just below the Taskbar in the Console window. This bar can be used to connect or disconnect the Host during Telnet sessions, send a Break command, change the font of the text displayed in the Telnet window or change the background color of the Telnet window.
2-9-2 Edit Menu Figure 2-10 Console Edit Menu Edit is the second menu on the Menu bar. The options available in the menu are: • Copy selected Event(s) The Copy selected Event(s) option enables you to copy the selected events from the Event View pane. • Select All The Select All option enables you to select all the events in the Event View Pane.
• Event Information Window This option enables you to toggle between the displayed and hidden modes of the Event Information View pane. • Application Log Window This option enables you to toggle between the displayed and hidden modes of the Application Log View pane. • Hosts Window This option enables you to toggle between the displayed and hidden modes of the Host(s) View pane. • Search Bars The Search Bars option can be used to select the search options available on the Search bar.
2-9-4 Policies Menu Figure 2-12 Console Policies Menu The options available in the Policies menu are: • New policy Selecting the New policy option displays the New Policy dialog box. You can define a new policy using this dialog box.
• Open Selecting the Open option displays the Select policy dialog box. The user can open an existing policy using this dialog box. Figure 2-14 Console Select policy Dialog Box • Edit active policy Clicking on the Edit active policy option displays the Edit Policy dialog box. The user can edit an active policy using this dialog box.
• Import Clicking on the Import option displays the Import Policies dialog box. The user can import a policy using this dialog box. Figure 2-16 Console Import Policies Dialog Box Export Selecting the Export option displays the Export Policies dialog box. The user can export policies using this dialog box. The policies are exported in the .epl format.
2-9-5 Tools Menu Figure 2-18 Console Tools Menu The options available in the Tools menu are: • Clear View/Remove all Events The Clear View/Remove all Events option enables you to remove all the events from selected view. Shortcut for this option is available on the toolbar as the Clear View icon. Clicking on this option displays the OVNM Console confirmation box. Click on the Yes button to remove all the events from the Event View pane of the selected policy.
The Suspend Processing option enables you to disable event processing in the active Event View pane. Shortcut for this option is available on the toolbar as the Suspend Processing icon. This option allows you to “freeze” the screen so you can review the messages without worrying about anything scrolling off the screen. • Resume Processing The Resume Processing option enables you to resume event processing. Shortcut for this option is available on the toolbar as the Resume Processing icon.
2-9-6 Window Menu Figure 2-22 Console Window Menu The Window menu offers the following options: • Cascade This option enables you to cascade different Event View windows.
• Tile This option enables you to tile different Event View windows in a tiled format and move easily from one to another. • Arrange Icons This option enables you to arrange the icons available on the toolbar. • More Windows Click on the More Windows option if you want to configure the display of the various Event View windows. This will display the Windows dialog box.
The various buttons available in the Windows dialog box are: • Activate This option enables you to activate the selected window. • OK This option enables you to save the changes and close the Windows dialog box. • Save This option enables you to save the changes in the dialog box. • Close Window(s) This option enables you to close the selected Event View windows. • Cascade This option enables you to cascade different windows.

2-11 Right-Click Menus Console provides the right-click feature in its interface. To access the right-click menus, you need to right-click on various areas in the window. The menu consists of the following menu options: • Activate This option enables you to display the respective window in the Events View pane. • Close This option enables you to close the selected window.
Telnet Profiles Figure 2-31 Console Telnet Profiles Right Click Menu The menu can be accessed when you right-click on the Telnet Profiles displayed in the Management pane. The menu consists of the following menu options: • New Profile This option allows you to add a new telnet profile. Specify the details like Profile Name, Emulator Type, Host Address and Port number under Telnet Properties area. • Open This option allows you to open the selected telnet session.
Web Links Figure 2-33 Console Web Links Right-Click Menu The menu can be accessed when you right-click on the Web Links displayed in the Management pane. The menu consists of the following menu options: • Add a new group This option enables you to add a new group. • Add a new link This option enables you to add a new link. • Edit This option enables you to edit the selected link. This option is displayed when you right-click on the web links/groups under the Web Links icons in the tree view.
Figure 2-35 Console Event Details Displayed • Acknowledge This option enables you to acknowledge the selected events. • Clear View This option enables you to clear all events from the Events View pane. • Refresh View This option enables you to refresh the event status displayed in the Events View pane. • Disable filter/Enable filter This option enables you to disable or enable an internal filter for the events.
• Add EMS Policy This option is displayed only when you have selected an event which has not been configured to be sent to HP Operations Manager. Selecting the option displays the Threshold dialog box. This allows you to add the selected event under the EMS subsystem and EVENT Object Class in Object Configuration Client. Figure 2-36 Threshold Dialog Box • Copy to Clipboard • Select All This option enables you to select all the events displayed in the Events View pane.
2-11-6 Horizontal Scroll Bar Area Figure 2-38 Console Horizontal Scroll Bar Area Right-Click Menu To avail this right-click menu you have to right-click on the horizontal scroll bar of the Event View Application Log or Host(s) View pane. It consists of commands related to scrolling in the windows. The various options available are: Scroll Here, Left Edge, Right Edge, Page Left, Page Right, Scroll Left and Scroll Right.
3 Console: Concepts 3-1 Prerequisites The prerequisites for using Console are as follows: OVNM Backend Components Must be Running In order to get information from the backend, the OVNM backend components must be up. Use the following command to verify the status of the backend components. Switch over to the volume.subvolume, where OVNM is installed before issuing the command. $ABC.OVNM32>RUN STATOVNM You need to start the backend components if they are not running.
Elink Should be Configured Elink for Console is configured using the OVNM tab page in the OVNM Host Installation Client’s New OVNM Configuration dialog box. Please make sure that a valid port value is provided in the OVNM Port field.
3-2 Management View The default Management pane is displayed below. The options available in the pane are Active Windows, NonStop Nodes, Policies, Tools and Web Links. Click on the plus sign (+) to expand the treeview. Double-click on any item in the Management pane to open the corresponding window. If the window is already open, the window is displayed as the “top” window. Figure 3-4 Console Management Pane • Acknowledged Events This option enables you to display only the events, which are acknowledged.
3-3 Event View The Event View pane in the Console window lists all the events for the selected HP NonStop Host along with the severity levels. Figure 3-5 Console Event View Pane The Event View pane displays the following information. • Severity This column displays the status of the event. This status may be Critical, Major, Minor, Warning, Normal or Unknown. The severity will be determined by the value in the eEvents panel of the OCC.
3-4 Event View Color Codes The events displayed in the Event View pane are color coded for easy monitoring. The Node Status bar at the bottom of the Event View pane displays various color legends along with the number of events in each category. 3-6 Application Log View Figure 3-8 Console Application Log View Pane The Application Log View pane gives information about the connection status with the local Elink. This window provides the following information. • Time This column displays the time when the connection occurred or when it was disconnected. • Description This column displays the connection status with the local Elink.
• Event Detail The Event Detail tab provides detailed information for the selected event. The information includes the Event Text, Node Name, SSID, Event Number, Severity, CPU, PIN, Subsystem OID, Customer Name, Location, Message Group, Generation Time, Log Time, Receive Time, Service ID, Subject, Manager, Process, OVO, Group, Subgroup, Node Config Name and Full Node Name.
3-8 Configuring Console Options You can configure the various Console options using the Options dialog box. Use the Options command on the Tools menu to access the dialog box. Figure 3-12 Consoles Option Dialog Box The following options can be configured using the Options dialog box. • Log Use the various check boxes in the Log area to restore the Console and Application Log window when an alert/entry is logged.
• Catch-Up The options in the Catch-Up area allows you to configure catching-up on lost events. • Prompt the user before logging events lost due to connection outage Select the radio button to prompt the user before logging events, which were lost due to a connection outage. The following confirmation box is displayed when you loose events because of a connection outage.
To use the policy in the current/active window as the default template, click on the Use current button. • Misc The Misc area can be used to configure the following options: • List maximum number of events in memory to Use this field to specify the maximum number of events in the memory. The default value is 10000. You can specify a value in the range of 1 – 999999. • List maximum number of acknowledged events to Use this field to specify the maximum number of acknowledged events in the memory.
3-9 Configuring an EMS Policy The Console application enables you to add the selected/similar event as a threshold to Object Configuration Client. The events are added by default to the EMS subsystem and EVENT object class. This action can be performed using the Add EMS Policy option in the Event View pane right-click menu. Clicking on the option displays the Threshold dialog box. Figure 3-16 Threshold Dialog Box The default values are filled in the various fields.
4 Policies 4-1 Configuring Policies Console enables you to add new policies through the New policy option in the Policies menu and edit active policies through the Edit active policy option in the Policies menu. Alternatively policies can also be added through the New Policy option in the right-click menu of the Management pane and edited through its Edit option. Selecting the New policy option in the Policies menu displays the New Policy dialog box.
This option enables you to select the fields to be displayed in the Event View pane. Select the fields from the list and click on the Add button to add the field to the Current Fields list. • Current Fields The Current Fields list displays the selected fields that will be displayed in the Event View pane. To remove a field from the list, select the field(s) and click on the Remove button.
Clicking on the Edit button will display the Edit Expression dialog box. Figure 4-3 Edit Expression Dialog Box The Edit Expression dialog box has several options to create a valid expression. The Boolean Expression can be created by combining field names (Field Name drop-down box) and values (Field Value combo box) using one or more operators. The various operators are available as buttons on the tab page.
Figure 4-4 Compose Expression Dialog Box Edit the expression and click on the OK button to add the new expression. To go back to the Edit Expression dialog box without the edit changes, click on the Cancel button. After creating the expression, click on the OK button in the Edit Expression dialog box. Actions Tab The Actions tab page in the New Policy dialog box enables you to specify actions to be executed automatically when a Boolean Expression is applied to an event.
To specify a new action, click on the New button. This displays the Enter Action Name dialog box. You can either specify a new name in the Action Name box, or clone the settings of an existing action using the Copy settings from existing action check box. Figure 4-6 Enter Action Name Dialog Box To specify the Boolean expression after which action is to be executed, use the Edit button. Use the various check boxes in the Execute following actions section to select the action to be performed.
2. Click the Select file button. The Select the policy file dialog box is displayed. Figure 4-8 Select the Policy File Dialog Box Select the file that you want to import and click on the Open button. 3. Click on the Import button to import the policy file. In case the policy already exists a confirmation dialog box is displayed seeking permission to overwrite it.
4-3 Exporting Policies Console enables you to export policies through the Export option in the Policies menu. Alternatively policies can also be exported through the Export option in the Management pane right-click menu. To export policies perform the following steps: 1. Select the Export option from the Policies menu to display the Export Policies dialog box. Figure 4-11 Export Policies Dialog Box 2. Click on the Export button. The Select a file name dialog box is displayed.
Console is designed to provide its user with ease-of-operations while adjusting the complex business views as per specific organizational requirements. The different tools provided in Console Tools option of Management pane are OVNM Applications, Telnet, Query Events, Distributor Management, Send Test Message and My Applications. Console also provides web browsing from within the interface.
5-1-2 Telnet Console provides the facility to access Telnet sessions for backend processes. Click on the plus sign (+) next to the Telnet tool to expand the view to see all the configured nodes. The Telnet window is displayed by double-clicking the node for which a Telnet session is required. The Telnet window is displayed in the Events View pane. Remember that this is a Telnet session, so block mode applications, like Tedit, will NOT work.
To change the configuration options available for the Telnet window, click on the on the Telnet toolbar. The Configuration dialog box is displayed.
5-1-3 Telnet Profiles Console also provides a functionality to create multiple profiles for the Telnet sessions. You can perform the following operations under Telnet profiles: Creating a new Profile Perform the following steps to create a new profile: 1. Right click on the Telnet Profiles available under Tools option in the Management Pane. Select the New Profile option from the displayed menu. 2. This displays the New Profile dialog box.
1. Right click on the profile you want to delete. 2. Click on the Delete option. This displays the OVNM Console confirmation box. Figure 5-6 OVNM Console Confirmation Box 3. Click on the Yes button, if you want to delete the profile. Importing Profile Configuration This option will allow you to import the profile configuration. Follow the steps given below to import the profile configuration: 4. Right click on the selected profile and select the Import option. 5.

Exporting a Profile 1. Right click on the selected profile and click on the Export option. 2. This displays the Export Telnet Profiles dialog box. 5-1-4 Query Events The Query Events feature allows you to run queries for events based on the criteria specified. Running a Query Double-click on the Query Events icon Query Events dialog box. in the Management pane to run a query. A default window name where the query results will be logged is displayed in the Window Name box.
Some examples of valid search strings for collectors are: $* $AB* $Z?OG* etc. If using a Logfile based query, you can specify a maximum of one Logfile using the Logfile box. This can either be provided directly or you have the option to search for the specific Logfile on the server.
Modifying a Query To modify a running query, click on is displayed with the saved settings. icon on the Toolbar. The Modify Query dialog box Figure 5-13 Modify Query Dialog Box Edit the required information and click on the Send Request button to send a request with the selected settings. The results of the new settings will be displayed window in the Events View pane. Click on the Close button to close the Modify Query dialog box.
The Distributor Management icon in the Management pane provides the facility to manage distributors. Double clicking on the icon displays the Manage Distributors dialog box. Figure 5-15 Console Manage Distributors Dialog Box In the displayed dialog box, select the HP NonStop node using the Host box and click on the Get Distributors button. The associated distributors are listed in the Distributors list box. To stop a distributor, select a distributor from the list and click on the Stop button.
5-1-6 Send Test Message The Send Test Message feature allows you to check the communication between the HP NonStop Node(s) and the HP Operations Manager Server. Sending a Test Message Double-click on the Send Test Message icon in the Management pane to send a test message. This displays the Send Test Message dialog box. Figure 5-16 Send Test Message Dialog Box Select the HP NonStop nodes in the Send To box in the Nodes area where you want to send the test message.
The event generated by the Test Message will be seen in the Event View pane. Two events will be generated for a specific node. One event for OVNM and the second event for OVNPM will be generated for all the respective nodes.
5-1-7 My Applications Console provides the facility to add a new application and edit or delete an existing application. Adding New Application To add a new application, right-click on the My Application tool and select the Add a new application option. The Add Application dialog box is displayed. Figure 5-19 Add Application Dialog Box The following fields are displayed in the dialog box. • Name This field enables you to enter the name of the application to be added.
Tools and Web Links Figure 5-20 New Application Added Editing Application To edit an existing application link, right-click on the application name and select the Edit option. The Edit Application dialog box is displayed with the saved settings. Edit the required information and click on the OK button to save the new settings. Deleting Application To delete an existing application link, right-click on the application name and select the Delete option. A confirmation box is displayed.
5-2 Web Links Depending on your business requirement and preference, Console allows you to add groups and web links, thus increasing the operator productivity. 5-2-1 Working with Web Links Adding a New Web Link To add a new web link, right-click on the Web Links option in the Management pane, and click the Add a new link option. The Add/Edit Link dialog box is displayed. Figure 5-22 Add/Edit Link Dialog Box Enter the following information in the dialog box.
To edit an existing web link, right-click on the name of the link and select the Edit option. The Add/Edit Link dialog box is displayed with the saved settings. Edit the required information and click on the OK button to save the new settings. Delete Web Link To delete an existing web link, right-click the name of the link and select the Delete option. The confirmation box is displayed. To remove the selected link, click on the OK button.
Edit Group To edit an existing group, right-click on the name of the group and select the Edit option. The Add/Edit dialog box is displayed with the saved settings. Edit the name of the group and click on the OK button to save the new settings. Delete Group To delete an existing group, right-click on the name of the group and select the Delete option. The confirmation box is displayed. To remove the selected group, click on the OK button.
