1 SNMP Adapter: An Introduction
This section lists the main features of OVNM Adapter for SNMP and highlights the advantages this software
offers.
1-1 What is SNMP Adapter?
SNMP Adapter is a powerful tool facilitating policy-based management of HP NonStop environment at the
enterprise level. It is a state-of-the-art agent, which integrates different SNMP compatible management platforms
with HP NonStop systems to provide easy event manageability. The SNMP Adapter recognizes the SNMP traps
sent by the HP NonStop and maps these SNMP events into recognizable SNMP compatible Management
Console like HP Operations NNM and BMC PATROL events and forwards them to the event server for
correlation.
SNMP Adapter caters to the needs of HP NonStop Server users to manage their NonStop server environment and
applications using SNMP, the most commonly used management protocol. The Simple Network Management
Protocol (SNMP) forms part of the internet protocol suite. SNMP is used in network management systems to
monitor network-attached devices. It consists of a set of standards for network management, including an
Application Layer protocol, a database schema, and a set of data objects. SNMP exposes management data in
the form of variables on the managed systems, which describe the system configuration.

SNMP Adapter closely integrates the Enterprise Managers that recognize SNMP Trap browsing with HP
NonStop environment. Intelligent SNMP Trap browser components monitor HP NonStop systems for resource
availability and take actions in response to important events and critical situations. These event and situation
messages are communicated to the enterprise management server through the SNMP Adapter.
SNMP Adapter features an industry-first Dynamic MIB (Management Information Base) that publishes live
application performance metrics dynamically after the application is deployed. The software facilitates event
integration, policy and services template setup and the ability to take manual (operator initiated) as well as
automated actions from the enterprise consoles.
This allows system operators and QA personnel to monitor the health of their entire IT infrastructure, including the
performance and availability of their HP NonStop environment, within the consoles of previously deployed
solutions.
