Glossary-2
(CSMA/CD)
(CSMA/CD). A characteristic of network hardware that uses CSMA access combined with a
mechanism that allows the hardware to detect when two stations simultaneously attempt
transmission. Ethernet is an example of a well-known network based on CSMA/CD
technology.
DELETE. A sensitive SCF command that removes objects from the PAM subsystem. Only
objects that were added with the ADD command can be deleted.
DETAIL. An option available with the INFO, STATUS, and VERSION commands in SCF
that provides additional information about a specific object.
DFC. Data forward count. The maximum number of inbound aggregate SDU messages that
should be queued before they are delivered.
DFS. Data forward size. The maximum size of an inbound aggregate SDU up to which SDUs
should be queued before they are delivered.
DFT. Data forward time. The maximum amount of time an inbound aggregate SDU message
should wait before it is delivered.
Distributed Systems Management (DSM). A set of products that supports the integrated
management of system and network resources and operation. DSM products include the
Subsystem Programmatic Interface (SPI), the Event Management Service (EMS), the
Distributed Name Service (DNS), the DSM Template Services, and the Subsystem
Control Facility (SCF) for data communications subsystems. DSM also includes a set of
management applications, including ViewPoint, Distributed System Management
Solutions (DSMS), and the DSM/Problem Manager (DSM/PM).
E4SA. See Ethernet 4 ServerNet adapter (E4SA)
.
Event Management Service (EMS). A part of DSM used to provide event collection, event
logging, and event distribution facilities. It provides for different event descriptions for
interactive and programmatic interfaces, lets an operator or application select specific
event-message data, and allows for flexible distribution of event messages within a
system or network. EMS has a Subsystem Programmatic Interface (SPI)-based
programmatic interface for both reporting and retrieving events.
Ethernet. A local area network that uses the CSMA/CD (carrier sense multiple access with
collision detection) access method on a bus topology and is the basis for the IEEE 802.3
standard.
Ethernet 4 ServerNet adapter (E4SA). A ServerNet adapter for Ethernet that contains four
Ethernet ports.
file-system access point (FSAP). The file-system access point used by network
communications applications and management applications.
fixed data. The data in an output field of a panel that cannot change when the panel is
displayed.
