Managing Servers
This section describes operations you need to perform to manage and maintain server-
related objects in a Compaq NonStop™ Pathway/XM environment.
The following topics are included:
Starting Server Classes
After you configure and start your Pathway/XM environment and define and add
SERVER objects, you issue the START SERVER command to activate each server
class.
You can use the START SERVER command to start a single server class, a defined
group of server classes, or all server classes in the Pathway/XM environment. For the
syntax of the START SERVER command, refer to START SERVER
on page 11-59.
For example, the following command starts all the server classes in the server group
XYZ:
>> START SERVER GROUP XYZ
The following command starts the server class named QUERIES:
>> START SERVER QUERIES
The following command starts all server classes in the Pathway/XM environment:
>> START SERVER *
When Pathway/XM executes the PXMCOM START SERVER command, it checks the
status of the specified server classes and then performs the operations needed to start the
processes initially needed for the server class. The processes created initially for each
server class depend on the server-class type, as described in the following subsections.
If you do not start a server class explicitly, it is started implicitly when a send request is
received for the server class. However, such a server class does not receive CPU
assignments from the PB processes and thus does not participate in Pathway/XM load
balancing. For this reason, it is recommended that you start all server classes explicitly.
