Migrating Pathway Applications to the
Pathway/XM Environment
To migrate existing Pathway applications (managed by a PATHMON process, using the
NonStop
TM
TS/MP and Compaq NonStopPathway/iTS products without Compaq
NonStop™ Pathway/XM) to the Pathway/XM environment, the Pathway/XM product
includes an intelligent migration utility program called PXMCNVRT. This utility
allows you to migrate your applications gradually, step by step.
Used together with its accompanying PATHCOM command (OBEY) file, BUILDCFG,
PXMCNVRT takes a running Pathway application, extracts the necessary information
from it, and creates a Pathway/XM configuration equivalent to your existing
PATHMON environment. This configuration is a first step; it provides improvements in
availability and limited load balancing.
After you have built an initial Pathway/XM configuration based on the output from
PXMCNVRT, you can edit this configuration to incorporate further manageability
improvements made possible by Pathway/XM. If your application is large and consists
of multiple PATHMON environments, you can use BUILDCFG and PXMCNVRT on
each PATHMON environment and then combine them all into one Pathway/XM
configuration.
The following is a recommended approach for stepwise migration of a Pathway
application to use the features of Pathway/XM.
1. If your application consists of multiple PATHMON environments, select one
PATHMON environment for initial migration.
2. Reset the statistics counters in your running PATHMON environment. You can do
this by using a sequence of PATHCOM commands such as the following:
STATS TCP *, RESET
STATS TERM *, RESET
STATS SERVER *, RESET
3. Allow your PATHMON environment to run for some length of time, preferably
during a period of typical transaction workload.
4. Run the BUILDCFG command (OBEY) file (provided with the Pathway/XM
product) by using the following PATHCOM command:
OBEY BUILDCFG
This command file collects information about your application to be used by
PXMCNVRT and stores it in an EDIT file named PCFGSRC.
