Configuring Object Attributes for Future Migration
Configuring Object Attributes for Future Migration
In the future, you might need to migrate your Pathway/XM environment to a different
set of NonStop
TM
Himalaya systems (physical nodes), either because of a system
failure or as part of a planned migration (for example, in a configuration that includes
Nomadic Disk technology). To best prepare your configuration for such future
migrations, it is recommended that you specify the physical node and the default
volume and subvolume in the SYSTEM and DEFAULT attributes of the NODE object
configuration and omit system, volume, and subvolume names from the attributes of
other objects.
Even when you omit the system, volume, and subvolume names from your object
attributes, however, some migration considerations arise. Using the NODE object
defaults can provide a smooth migration for process names. However, you might have
to change some disk-volume names and device names manually even if the system
portion of the name is not specified. For example, if you are migrating terminals or
printers, you will either need to manually change the device names or ensure that
terminal and printer devices with the same names are attached to the new physical node.
Other attributes need careful review as well—for example, user ID specifications.
Table 4-1
lists object attributes that you might need to change when moving your
application to a different set of physical nodes.
Table 4-1. Migration Considerations: Object Attribute Values (page 1 of 2)
Object or Process Attribute Considerations/ Recommendations
NODE object CPUS Ensure that the CPU numbers are
valid for the physical node specified
in the SYSTEM attribute.
DEFAULT Ensure that the specified volume and
subvolume names are valid for the
physical node specified in the
SYSTEM attribute.
SYSTEM Specify the desired physical node
name for the processes governed by
this NODE object.
PATHWAY object OWNER owner-id Ensure that user ID is known to new
system or change manually.
SERVER class DEFINE define-spec Could include system name stored as
buffer; check and change manually if
required.
HOMETERM termname Ensure that a terminal with same
name exists on new system or change
manually.
OWNER owner-id Ensure that user ID is known to new
system or change manually.
