Acquirer  The acquirer is the organization which, under arrangement with and on behalf of an issuer, 
discharges the obligations owed by that issuer to the relevant cardholder when the cardholder 
undertakes a transaction via an access point owned/controlled by the acquirer. As a result, the 
acquirer engages in interchange activities with that issuer. 
Approvals  Any transaction that is approved by the card holder’s bank (issuer). 
BIN  Bank Identification Number: An identification number consisting of a two-part code assigned to 
banks and savings associations; the first part shows the location and the second identifies the 
bank itself. 
Denials  A notification from an issuer that a claim for payment (or request for pre-authorization) is not 
approved. 
Entity  A body or Unit that exists as or is perceived as a single separate object. 
FIID  The FIID or the Financial Institution ID is defined in the Institution Definition File (IDF). The FIID is 
an identifier that must be unique within the Logical Network. 
Host  The HP NonStop Server is referred to as the Host. 
Issuer  An entity which issues the card. 
IC  Interchange (IC) is a transaction acquired by the reporting organization that is initiated by a 
credit or charge card issued by a different issuer than the reporting organization. 
LCONF  The POS Logical Configuration file. 
Logical Network 
(LNET) 
A network that is concerned only with connection paths and is independent of the physical 
location of equipment in the network. 
Node  A single HP NonStop Server is referred to as a Node. 
POS  Point of Sale. 
Response Time  The time it takes a system to react to a given input. 
Response Code  A three digit code that indicates whether a transaction was approved or declined. 
Reversals  A notification from an issuer that a claim for payment (or request for pre-authorization) is 
reversed. 
Reversal Code  A two digit code that indicates the reason for a reversal or adjustment of transaction. 
Timeouts  A time limit for an operation. 
Transactions  Exchange of goods or services between entities. 
Transaction Code  A two digit code identifying the type of transaction taking place.
