Processor Halt Codes Manual

Cause
The Read Interrupt Cause (RIC) word returned from the system-load device indicated that the
controller is “dead.” This might be the result of an actual malfunction or failure of the device, or
the device’s millicode might be incompatible with the programmable read-only memory (PROM)
code.
Effect
The processor halts. The rest of the system is not affected.
Recovery
Examine the state of the controller and reconfigure the device. If the revision levels of the controller
millicode and PROM code are incompatible, update the firmware, the board, or both, as
necessary. If the problem persists, contact your service provider or the Global NonStop Solution
Center (GNSC), as directed by your local operating procedures.

Cause
The channel cable status returned from the input/output subsystem (IOS) indicates that the channel
cabling is bad or that the cable to the disk channel is missing.
Effect
The processor halts. The rest of the system is not affected. No more input/output (I/O) commands
will be retried.
Recovery
Examine the cable connection and correct the problem. This halt could indicate either a bad
tape or disk, depending on the type of system-load operation the user requested. If the problem
persists, contact your service provider or the Global NonStop Solution Center (GNSC), as
directed by your local operating procedures.

Cause
The controller returned “controller exception” Read Interrupt Cause (RIC) status.
Effect
The processor halts. The rest of the system is not affected.
Recovery
Examine the hardware state. Contact your service provider or the Global NonStop Solution
Center (GNSC), as directed by your local operating procedures.

Cause
An attempt was made to load a processor from a tape or disk that does not contain the bootstrap
code for that system. This error is generated by programmable read-only memory (PROM), which
is responsible for reading the bootstrap code from the tape or disk containing the system-image
file
Effect
The processor halts. The rest of the system is not affected.
Recovery
Retry the operation, specifying the correct tape or disk.
