Throughput Option
The Throughput option provides a reference value that a NIF will use in estimating
transmission times for messages it sends via an asynchronous connection. These
estimations are needed in order for the NIF to determine when it must send
acknowledgement packets to its partner (remote) asynchronous NIF to satisfy Piccolo’s
internal asynchronous communication protocol.
The Throughput option is related to the modem connection data rate minus overhead.
Overhead includes several internal levels of handshaking, delays due to system
architecture, delays due to system load on either end of the connection, losses due to
noisy connections, and delays due to the use of Piccolo logging. If the Throughput
value is too high, the NIF will underestimate packet transmission times and fail to send
required acknowledgements, resulting in a link drop with the error
PIPERC_PATH_FAILURE. If your asynchronous connections fail with this error despite
a good modem connection or direct connection of the client and workstation system,
contact HP Global Customer Support Center (GCSC).
