Migration Tips
There are three major variations of RSC that are referenced in the following section:
•
RSC, also known as RSC Classic. This variation utilizes direct communication
objects. Versions up through 5.0 are RSC versions.
•
RSC for Piccolo. This variation introduced Piccolo as the RSC/MP transport. The
Piccolo component and RSC were packaged as separate products. Versions 5.0 -
5.x are RSC for Piccolo versions. (Note version 5.0 is a mixed version, including
both RSC Classic and RSC for Piccolo.)
•
RSC/MP. This variation utilizes the Piccolo transport introduced in RSC for Piccolo.
The Piccolo transport and RSC/MP are packaged as a single product. Versions 6.x
and 7.x are RSC/MP versions.
Each new release of RSC/MP provides a host component that supports clients from
some number of previous releases. However, previous releases of the host component
are NOT guaranteed to work with newer clients. As a general rule the version of
RSC/MP installed on the workstation should be no more recent than the version on the
host. For example, the host component TDP version 7.2 is compatible with client
versions 5.1 through 7.2; however TDP version 6.3 is not guaranteed to be compatible
with a 7.2 client, and this type of configuration is strongly discouraged.
The host should be migrated first. Depending on the versions of existing clients, a TDP
can support connections from multiple versions of clients, allowing for clients to be
migrated over a period of time. See the information below on compatibility issues with
a new host and older clients
Note. The RSC/MP 7.2 Host will not accept communication requests from clients
prior to RSC version 5.1. See Migrating from RSC 5.0 and Previous Versions to
RSC/MP 7.2 on page A-6 for information about how to migrate from versions older
than RSC 5.1.
