Migrating from RSC 5.0 and Previous Versions to
RSC/MP 7.2
Migrating from RSC 5.0 and Previous Versions
to RSC/MP 7.2
A migration from non-Piccolo based RSC clients to RSC/MP requires a conversion to
Piccolo as well as a migration of the host and all clients.
Two ways to accomplish this migration are discussed here. The first approach
describes an intermediate migration to RSC/MP 6.3; the second approach describes
migrating the host and clients to RSC/MP 7.2 in a single leap.
Using RSC/MP 6.3 to Migrate
An advantage of upgrading in steps is easier isolation of problems. If only the host
component is migrated and it does not work with an older client, the problem is limited
to the new host component’s interaction with the old client. A disadvantage of this
approach is the host and client components need to be migrated twice, first from the
older release to RSC/MP 6.3 and then to RSC/MP 7.2.
To migrate from RSC version 5.0 and earlier versions to RSC/MP 7.2 using RSC/MP
6.3 as in intermediate step, do the following:
1. Install the new RSC/MP 6.3 host component. Refer to the RSC/MP 6.3
documentation for details on how to install the RSC/MP 6.3 host.
2. (Optional) Verify the RSC application can communicate with the new RSC/MP 6.3
host component. If the application uses features that have been discontinued in the
RSC/MP host, adjust the application as necessary.
3. On the host, add and start a TDP PIPE object, see Configuring TDP Objects on
page 12-4.
4. Install the RSC/MP 6.3 client. Do not install the RSC/MP 7.2 client at this point;
the client should not be newer then the host component. Follow the steps for
installing RSC/MP 6.3 client that apply to your platform.
5. Create the RSC/MP Transport (Piccolo) configuration for use with the installation
testing program (see Configuring the RSC/MP Transport (Piccolo) on page 5-1).
Verify a connection can be made by using the PIPECP CONNECT command.
6. Create a simple RSC.INI file for use with the installation testing program. See
Basic RSC.INI Configuration on page 14-2.
7. Verify the RSC/MP installation by using the RSCTEST or RSCTESTW program;
see Testing the RSC/MP Client Configuration on page 14-8.
8. Modify the configuration for existing RSC applications using information in
Migrating Connectivity Options on page A-8.
9. Refer to Migrating from RSC for Piccolo 5.1 -- RSC/MP 6.x to RSC/MP 7.2 on
page A-4 for information on how to migrate from RSC/MP 6.3 to RSC/MP 7.2.
