B SCF Error Messages
This appendix lists the SCF error messages, describes the probable cause of each
error, and suggests recovery action. Error numbers are shown as err-num; numbers
are shown as lowercase n. Messages are listed in positive and then negative numeric
order. Messages specific to a particular subsystem supported by SCF are listed in the
SCF reference manual for that particular subsystem. Operating system messages are
presented in the Guardian Procedure Errors and Messages Manual.
SCF displays an error message when it cannot complete the requested action. This
happens when the command is entered incorrectly or is not appropriate for some
reason (for example, the target object cannot be found or is not in the required state, or
the user does not have a proper user ID to perform a sensitive command).
Error messages for SCF commands sent to subsystem processes can originate either
from the subsystem itself or from SCF. Each error message is preceded by the name
of the subsystem that returns the error. For example, errors returned by the OSI/MHS
subsystem are identified by the string MHS, and errors returned by SCF are identified
by the string SCF.
Common Versus Subsystem-Specific Errors
SCF provides a pool of error messages, called “common errors,” that can be used by
all subsystems. These errors always have negative error numbers. Your subsystem
may use these common errors. Your subsystem also can generate error messages,
called “subsystem-specific errors,” that pertain solely to that subsystem. These errors
always have positive error numbers.
For each error, therefore, you must look at the subsystem identifier to see which
subsystem returned the error, and look at the error number to determine whether it is a
common error or a subsystem-specific error. For more information on error messages,
