real user ID
real user ID. An attribute of a process. When a process is created, the real user ID
identifies the user or parent process that created the new process. The real user ID
cannot be changed after process creation.
reference monitor. The portion of the computer system responsible for granting user IDs
access to objects.
remote password. A character string used for user authentication when the user accesses
another system on an Expand network.
requester. A process interfacing with a user that collects and displays data. For example, a
requester can request a server to perform a database update and retrieval. See also
server.
RMI. Abbreviation for Remote Maintenance Interface. A peripheral used for maintenance
and some operations in the NonStop system, primarily over a communications link.

SAFECOM. The user interface to the Safeguard software. SAFECOM commands are used
to establish and maintain object authorization records and user authentication records.
Safeguard. An HP product that supplements Guardian security features.
sanitize. To make secure in a known way, or to uncover (and ultimately remove) means by
which a perpetrator has obtained or might obtain unauthorized access.
saved-set-group ID. An process attribute that stores a group ID so that the group ID can
later be used as the effective group ID of the process.
saved-set-user ID. An process attribute that stores a user ID so that the user ID can later
be used as the effective user ID of the process.
security. The processes and procedures necessary to ensure data protection.
security administrator. The person responsible for establishing and maintaining system
security. A security administrator helps develop and implement an organization’s
security policy.
security OSS administrator. The person responsible for granting additional OSS security
management privileges to the users.
security policy. An organization’s statement of objectives regarding the protection of
information and computer resources.
security string. A four-character string denoting the classes of user IDs that can read,
write, execute, and purge the information stored in a Guardian file. Classes of user IDs
include owner only (the owner of the file), owner and his or her group (all user IDs that
have the same group ID), or everyone (all valid user IDs). Locations include local
system only or networkwide access for those user IDs that have interlocking
