Fiber-Optic Cable Specifications
Fiber-Optic Cable Specifications
If you plan to use any fiber-optic cables not provided by HP, use this information to help
you choose the correct cable. The fiber-optic cables conform to the IEEE 802.3z
(Gigabit Ethernet) specification.
Single-Mode Fiber-Optic (SMF) Cables
HP supports customer-provided SMF cables for use with the 6780 switches if certain
requirements are met as shown in Table D-2 and Table D-3.
Table D-2 describes the requirements for the SMF fiber.
Table D-3 describes the requirements for the SMF fiber-optic cable and the ServerNet
cluster.
Table D-2. SMF Fiber-Optic Requirements
Description Requirements
Fiber-optic Corning SMF-28
Nominal fiber specification
wavelength
1310 nm
Core/cladding diameter 9/125 micrometers
Cable attenuation (max) 0.7 dB/km
Connector Insertion Loss .5 dB plus .003 db/M for cables over 30 meters
Table D-3. SMF Cable Requirements
Description Requirements
Bend radius (smallest
allowable bend)
Short term during installation: .12 inches (3 cm)
Long term: .16 in. (4 cm)
SMF cables between a
6780 switch and a
NonStop S-series server
Connector/receptacle type: Duplex LC and Duplex SC
Operating distance and supported lengths: HP supports a
maximum of 80 meters.
SMF cables between
zones
Connector/receptacle type: Duplex LC
HP supports these maximum operating distances and lengths
between zones:
•
Up to 5 kilometers if all processors in the ServerNet
cluster are S76000, S86000, or later
•
Up to 1 kilometer if any other type of processor is included
in the ServerNet cluster
•
Up to 15 kilometers if the requirements in Appendix G,
Using the Long-Distance Option, are met
