Task 5: Plan for the Power Requirements

Check that you order the appropriate parts for the best fault tolerance. Check that the

power cords are long enough to reach between the 6780 switch and either the UPS,

PDU, or external power source.

Nodes

Power planning for NonStop servers and their peripheral equipment (for example, tape

drives, disk drives, and system consoles) is the same whether or not the server is a

node in a ServerNet cluster. Because external ServerNet fabrics use fiber-optic cable,

each server is electrically isolated from transient signals originating at another server.

6780 Switch

For fault tolerance, plug the dual power cords provided on each 6780 switch into

separate power sources. HP recommends that you connect one of the power cords

from each switch to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). You connect the other

power cord to either a power distribution unit (PDU) or directly to an external power

source.

Table 3-6 describes power requirements for the switch.

Power Distribution Unit (PDU)

For the 6780 switches, the number of PDUs required depends on the number of

switches in a rack. Refer to Table 3-7.
