checkpoint. A point at which information about the status of a job and the system can
be recorded so that the job step can be later restarted.
CICS. Customer Information Control System.
cluster controller. A device that controls access (I/O operations) to a group of terminals
or printers connected to it. A cluster controller may be controlled by a program stored
and executed in the unit, or it may be entirely controlled by hardware.
command (OBEY) file. A file that serves as a source for command input.
command interpreter. A direct interface between users and the operating system. Users
at on-line terminals interact with the command interpreter by entering commands, and
the command interpreter translates input to commands that a Tandem system
executes.
communication controller. A device that directs the transmission of data over the data
links of a network; its operation may be controlled by a program executed in a
processor to which the controller is connected, or it may be controlled by a program
executed within the device.
configuration. The definition or alteration of characteristics of an object.
CONNECTED message. A SNAX/CM interface message that signals the establishment of
a switched connection.
connection manager. See SNAX Connection Manager.
data link layer. The layer that provides the functions and procedures used to establish,
maintain, and release data link connections between elements of the network.
destination address. The MAC address of the intended receiver of the data.
dial-in. A SNAX/XF switched-line feature that allows the SNAX/XF line to condition
its hardware to receive incoming calls.
dial-out. A SNAX/CM switched-line feature that allows the SNAX/XF line to
condition its hardware to receive incoming calls.
DISCONNECTED message. A SNAX/CM interface message that signals the termination
of a switched connection.
Distributed Systems Management (DSM). A set of software tools used to manage Tandem
NonStop systems and Expand networks, including the Viewpoint console application,
the Subsystem Control Facility (SCF) for data communications subsystems, the
Subsystem Programmatic Interface (SPI), the Event Management Service (EMS), the
Distributed Name Service (DNS), and token-oriented programmatic interfaces to the
management processes for various Tandem subsystems.
DSM. See Distributed Systems Management.
error. A condition that causes a command or other operation to fail.
error code. A value indicating the reason for the error.
