117143 SNAX Creator-2 Configuration and Control Manual Glossary–1
This glossary defines terms used in this manual. Several definitions are taken from the
IBM Dictionary of Computing and the IBM Network Program Products: General
Information. Please refer to these IBM manuals for IBM terms not included in this
glossary.
access method. A generic term referring to the I/O process or communications
subsystem that provides application access to a communications line. SNAX/XF and
SNAX/APN are access methods.
acquire. The means by which a Tandem application initiates and establishes a session
with a logical unit in another domain. It is supported within the CRT and ITI APIs.
advanced peer-to-peer networking (APPN). Networking in which all nodes communicate as
peer type 2.1 nodes. APPN is implemented (at the entry level) in the SNAX/APN
product.
API. See application programming interface (API).
APPL object type. An object type that identifies an application to the SNAX Creator-2
subsystem. An APPL object can be (1) a Pathway application, (2) a TACL application,
or (3) a user-written server application.
application. See application process.
application process. A program that accomplishes a business need, such as inventory
control or payroll processing. SNAX products (1) extend access to Tandem
applications across SNA networks and (2) provide Tandem devices and applications
access to applications in SNA networks. Tandem users may write their own
application programs (see application programming interface) or use those provided
by Tandem and third parties.
application programming interface (API). A programming interface that enables user
applications to access a software product’s functions. SNAX/APC and the CRT
interface are examples of APIs.
APPN. See advanced peer-to-peer networking (APPN).
attribute. A named, configurable characteristic of an object. Each attribute has a name
and a value. For example, METHOD is the name of an attribute, which can take on
one of the following three values: TACL, PATHWAY, or SERVER.
audit. (1) The Safeguard function that records attempts by subjects to access objects or
gain access to the system and attempts by subjects to manage object authorization
records. (2) To examine a record of system events to determine conformity to security
controls and procedures.
backup. The hardware and software resources available to recover after a degradation
or failure of one or more system components.
BCPU. An attribute for SUBSYS objects. It alters the value of the backup CPU number.
built-in function. A function that is available for your use when you specify the value of
an attribute in an SCF command.
