Glossary–6 111813 Tandem Computers Incorporated
network. A group of interconnected computer systems and devices, and the hardware
and software used to connect them.
network addressable unit (NAU). In SNA, a logical unit, physical unit, or a system services
control point. The NAU is the origin or the destination of information transmitted
through the network.
network node (NN). A type 2.1 node that, besides offering full SNA end-user services,
provides intermediate routing services within a type 2.1 network, and network
services to its local LUs and attached type 2.1 end nodes in its domain; it can also
attach to a subarea network as a peripheral node.
NN. See network node.
node. In SNA, an endpoint of a link or junction common to two or more links in a
network. There are peripheral and subarea nodes. Nodes include host processors,
communication controllers, cluster controllers, and work stations. Nodes can vary in
routing and other functional capabilities.
node type (NT). In SNA, a designation of a node according to the protocols it supports
and the network addressable units that it can contain. Five types are defined: 1, 2.0,
2.1, 4 and 5.
NonStop operation. A Tandem system behavior characterized by continued operation
even when a component fails, when equipment is being repaired or replaced, or while
new processors or peripheral devices are being added to the system. Legally used
only to describe the Tandem Nonstop system or its features, such as NonStop process
pairs.
Obey file. See command file.
object. In Tandem terminology, an object is an entity that can be configured,
controlled, and inquired about by the operator. An addressed object is the object
specified in a command. A target object is the object that is acted upon by a command.
Addressed and target objects are usually the same.
parallel sessions. In SNA, two or more concurrently active sessions between the same
two logical units using different pairs of network addresses. Each session can have
independent session parameters.
PARAM. A generic term for SNAX/APC startup parameters.
partner LU. An LU in session with the LU under discussion.
PATHCOM . (1) The interactive interface to the PATHMON process, through which
users enter commands to configure and manage Pathway applications. (2) The process
that provides this interface.
PATHMON process . The central controlling process in the Pathway environment. The
PATHMON process maintains configuration-related data; grants links to server classes
in response to requests from TCPs (terminal control processes) and LINKMON
processes; and performs all process control (starting, monitoring, restarting, and
stopping) of server processes and TCPs.
