The following list identifies some of the more important IBM SNA manuals. These are
useful in planning and programming SNAX/HLS applications.
Systems Network Architecture Concepts and Products (IBM Order No. GC30-3072)
presents an overview of an SNA network and is suggested reading for a first
exposure to SNA.
Systems Network Architecture Technical Overview (IBM Order No. GC30-3073)
continues the introduction begun in the concepts and products manual. It
explains how SNA functions combine to provide communications facilities.
Systems Network Architecture Reference Summary (IBM Order No. GA27-3136)
provides a technical summary of the structure and use of SNA and is an
invaluable tool for anyone having to analyze an SNA session. It contains
descriptions of all messages that flow in SNA sessions. This document updates
some of the information listed in the format and protocol manual.
Systems Network Architecture Sessions Between Logical Units (IBM Order No.
GC20-1868) describes the presentation services functions needed to communicate
with particular types of logical units (LUs). Included are the specifications of
BIND images supported by each LU and the function management header (FMH)
records. This is recommended for anyone who communicates with standard SNA
terminals or programs that implement specific LU protocols.
Systems Network Architecture Format and Protocol Reference Manual: Architecture Logic
(IBM Order No. SC30-3112) formally defines SNA architecture. It is intended for
system programmers and others who need detailed information about SNA. It
contains specifications of all of the finite state machines (FSMs) and all the
procedures to manage the sessions.
Systems Network Architecture Field Engineering Handbook (IBM Order No.
G226-3548).
The following component description manuals may also be of interest:
3270 Data Stream Programmer’s Reference (IBM Order No. GA23-0059) describes
how to communicate with 3270-type terminals. It is a useful source of
information, primarily because 3270 protocol applies to many products attached to
SNA networks.
IBM Synchronous Data Link Control, General Information (IBM Order No.
GA27-3093) defines the SDLC protocol, although SNAX/HLS hides the details of
SDLC from the application.
