Distributed Systems Management (DSM)
Distributed Systems Management (DSM)
This subsection gives you a brief introduction to the Distributed Systems Management
(DSM) environment for NonStop systems. For more information, see the manual,
Introduction to Distributed Systems Management (DSM).
If you are already familiar with DSM and SCF, you can proceed to Section 12, Objects
for SNAX/XF and SNAX/APN. For a complete description of SCF features that apply to
all subsystems, see the SCF Reference Manual for G-series RVUs.
DSM is a set of products that support integrated management of system and network
resources and operations. DSM architecture consists of the following:
An operations environment providing applications and tools for operations tasks
and for controlling subsystems
A subsystem environment, in which subsystems (such as SNAX/XF or SNAX/APN)
and the objects they control are managed by the tools and applications in the
operations environment
A set of management services that support the programmatic interface between
DSM and the subsystem environment
The management services depend on the Subsystem Programmatic Interface (SPI) for
communication between the operations and subsystem environments. SPI is a
standard set of procedures and associated definition files used to define common
message-based programmatic interfaces for communication between requesters and
servers—for instance, in a management application. SPI includes procedures to build
and decode specially formatted messages using tokens. SCF is a management
application, provided by HP, that uses SPI internally.
Figure 11-4 shows the relationships between DSM and the subsystem environment.
