Glossary-2
API
API. See application program interface (API).
APPC. See advanced program-to-program communication (APPC).
APPL object type. An SCF or SPI object type that allows an installed application process of
a given type to open the service-manager process using a specified subdevice name.
application (A program or set of programs or routines designed to perform a specific task,
usually involving specified operations on a database. For example, the NetBatch Plus
application consists of programs that allow the user to set up and control NetBatch
schedulers and their objects. Individual programs that implement a part of a task are
known as “application programs” or “application software.” Application programs can
be distinguished from system software (the operating system that makes the computer
work), system utilities (programs which perform system maintenance or general-
purpose tasks), and computer programming languages (used to create new
applications).
application program interface (API). A set of functions or procedures that are called by an
application program to communicate with other software components.
APPN. See advanced peer-to-peer networking (APPN).
APPN network. An SNA network implementing advanced peer-to-peer networking.
APPN network node. AAn APPN node that, besides offering full SNA end-user services,
provides intermediate routing services within an APPN network, and network services
to its local LUs and attached end nodes in its domain; it can also attach to a subarea
network as a peripheral node. Also known as a Network Node Server (NNS).
APPN node. A network node or end node.
AS/400. A mid-size system produced by IBM.
associated passthrough. A passthrough mode that allows the host application program to
take the initiative in establishing sessions with devices connected to a NonStop
system. With associated passthrough, no USS messages flow from the host SSCP to
the device. Logon requests from the device flow to the SNAX SSCP and not the host
SSCP.
attributes. Those characteristics that influence the operation of an object and establish its
capabilities. For example, two attributes of a process might be its program file and its
user ID. An attribute is sometimes called a modifier.
availability. The amount of time an application running on a NonStop system can be used
effectively by a user of that application.
backup process. The member of a process pair that takes over the application work when
the primary process fails.
