node
node. (1) A station or physical device that allows for the transmission of data within a
network. (2) In SNA, an endpoint of a link or junction common to two or more links in a
network. There are peripheral and subarea nodes. Nodes include host processors,
communication controllers, cluster controllers, or terminals. Nodes can vary in routing
and other functional capabilities. Each SNA node must contain at least one NAU. See
also node type (NT)
.
node type (NT). In SNA, a designation of a node according to the protocols it supports and
the network addressable units that it can contain. Five types are defined: 1, 2.0, 2.1, 4
and 5. The difference between type 2.0 nodes and type 2.1 nodes reflects the two
different approaches that SNA defines for connecting nodes into networks — subarea
networking and advanced peer-to-peer networking. See also node type 2.1
.
node type 2.1. The SNA node type used in APPN. There are three varieties: low-entry
networking (LEN) end node, APPN end node and APPN network node. LEN end node
is implemented in the SNAX/APN product; HP does not currently support the other two.
nonsensitive command. A command that can be issued by any user or program that is
allowed access to the subsystem—that is, a command on which the subsystem
imposes no further security restrictions. For Subsystem Control Facility (SCF)
subsystems, nonsensitive commands are those that cannot change the state or
configuration of objects; most of them are information commands. Contrast with
sensitive command.
NonStop. On NonStop systems, processing characterized by continued operation even
when a component fails, when equipment is being repaired or replaced, or while new
processors or peripheral devices are being added to the system.
NonStop K-series servers. The set of servers having product numbers beginning with the
letter “K.” These servers run the NonStop Kernel operating system, but they do not
implement the ServerNet architecture.
NonStop Kernel. The NonStop operating system under which the SNAX/XF and
SNAX/APN software runs, consisting of the core and system services.
NonStop S-series servers. The set of servers having product numbers beginning with the
letter “S.” These servers implement the ServerNet architecture and run the NonStop
Kernel operating system.
nonswitched line. A telecommunication line on which connections do not have to be
established by dialing. Also called leased line. Contrast with switched line.
NPSI. IBM X.25 NCP Packet Switching Interface.
NS-series. A version of hardware. The Integrity NonStop NS-series servers run with H-
series software.
