Glossary
ABORTING state. As defined by SCF or SPI, the state of an object when an ABORT
command has been issued against that object but has not completed. This state indicates
that sessions and data traffic are being interrupted abnormally, with possible loss of data.
ACTIVE state. An SNA object state indicating that the object is able to perform the function
for which it was designed.
ADD command. A sensitive Subsystem Control Facility (SCF) command that defines an
object to a subsystem.
advanced peer-to-peer networking (APPN). Networking in which all nodes communicate
as peer type 2.1 nodes. An extension of SNA featuring greater distributed network
control that avoids critical hierarchical dependencies, thereby isolating the effects of
single points of failure. APPN extends the LU 6.2 peer orientation for end-user services
to network control. Implemented (at the entry level) in the SNAX/APN product.
Contrast with subarea networking.
alias LU name. A temporary LU name used by SNAX/CM that is generated by SNAX/XF.
The alias LU name is the first LU name of the LUs configured under the connected PU.
A portion of the alias LU name and the alias LU count can be used to construct all the
alias LU names for a connected PU.
alphanumeric. A parameter definition indicating that a valid character can be alphabetic
(A through Z, upper case or lower case) or numeric (0 through 9).
ALTER command. A sensitive Subsystem Control Facility (SCF) command that changes the
values of the attributes of an existing object. This command changes only the specified
attributes of the named (or assumed) object or objects.
ANSI. American National Standards Institute.
APPL object type. An SCF or SPI object type that allows an installed application process of
a given type to open the service-manager process using a specified subdevice name. The
programmatic token for this object is ZCOM-OBJ-APPL.
application program. A software program written for or by a user to fulfill a specific
purpose.
APPN node. A network node or end node. See also advanced peer-to-peer networking
(APPN).
ASCII. American National Standard Code for Information Interchange. An 8-bit code
representing characters and control codes. One of two major codes used to represent and
exchange data (the other is EBCDIC).
associated passthrough. A passthrough mode that allows the host application program to
take the initiative in establishing sessions with devices connected to a Compaq system.
