Migration Terminology
You should become familiar with these terms, which are used throughout the manual:
Migration. Moving your database and applications from one database product to another,
such as migrating from NonStop SQL/MP to NonStop SQL/MX. Migration also includes
upgrading from an older to a newer release of NonStop SQL/MX, such as migrating
from SQL/MX Release 1.8 to SQL/MX Release 2.x.
Fallback. Reverting from a newly installed database product to the previously installed
database product, such as falling back from NonStop SQL/MX to NonStop SQL/MP.
Fallback also includes downgrading from a newer to an older release of NonStop
SQL/MX, such as falling back from SQL/MX Release 2.x to SQL/MX Release 1.8.
Upgrade. Moving from an older software version to a newer software version. For example,
you upgrade to a newer incremental or maintenance release of NonStop SQL/MX,
such as upgrading from SQL/MX Release 2.1 to SQL/MX Release 2.2.
Downgrade. Reverting from a newer software version to an older software version. For
example, you downgrade to an older incremental or maintenance release of NonStop
SQL/MX, such as downgrading from SQL/MX Release 2.2 to SQL/MX Release 2.1.
Version. A product version or the version of a software component.
Release. The term used to refer to the product version of NonStop SQL/MX. An SQL/MX
release identifies a set of SQL/MX products as belonging to a given version of NonStop
SQL/MX.
SQL/MP application. Uses SQL/MP syntax, is SQL-compiled using SQLCOMP, and can
query only SQL/MP database objects.
SQL/MX application. Uses SQL/MX syntax, is SQL-compiled using MXCMP, and can query
SQL/MP and SQL/MX database objects.
