physical link interfaces
physical link interfaces. Communications standards defined by standards organization.
The following physical link interfaces are supported for the SWAN 2 concentrator: RS-
232, RS-449, RS-442, V.35, and X.21.
port. See WAN port.
RS-232. An industry standard for serial data transmission. It describes pin assignments,
signal functions, and electrical characteristics. The current standard specifies a 25-pin
connector.
RS-449. An industry standard for serial data transmission. It specifies pin assignments,
signal functions, electrical characteristics, and a 37-pin connector with an optional 9-
pin connector for a secondary channel.
SCF. See Subsystem Control Facility (SCF).
SERVER object. A configurable object within the wide area network (WAN) subsystem
Subsystem Control Facility (SCF) interface that represents one communications line
interface processor (CLIP) on a SWAN 2 concentrator.
ServerNet wide area network (SWAN) concentrator. (1) A HP data communications
peripheral that provides connectivity to an HP NonStop S-series server. The SWAN
concentrator supports both synchronous and asynchronous data over RS-232,
RS-449, X.21, and V.35 electrical and physical interfaces. (2) A collective term for both
SWAN concentrators and SWAN 2 concentrators when a distinction between the two is
not required.
ServerNet wide area network (SWAN) 2 concentrator. A HP data communications
peripheral that provides connectivity to an HP NonStop S-series server. The SWAN 2
concentrator supports both synchronous and asynchronous data over RS-232,
RS-449, X.21, and V.35 electrical and physical interfaces. The SWAN 2 concentrator
is the next-generation SWAN concentrator and has 12 WAN ports.
Subsystem Control Facility (SCF). An interactive interface for configuring, controlling, and
collecting information from SCF subsystems and objects. SCF enables you to
configure and reconfigure devices, processes, and some system variables while your
HP NonStop S-series server is online. SCF provides a management interface in the
wide area network (WAN) subsystem.
synchronous. A mode of data communications transmission in which characters are
accumulated in a buffer at the sending terminal and sent as a block of data.
Synchronous transmission normally uses external clocking provided by a synchronous
modem. The clocking scheme assumes that once transmission starts, characters will
arrive in a block at a predetermined speed.
TSM. See Compaq TSM.
V.35. The International Telecommunications Union, Telecommunication Standardization
Sector (ITU-T) standard for data transmission at 48 kilobits/second over 60 - 108
