ESD Guidelines
ESD Guidelines
Observe these ESD guidelines whenever you handle electronic components.
Obtain an electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection kit and follow the directions that
come with the kit. Ensure that your ESD wriststrap has a built-in series resistor
and that the kit includes an antistatic table mat.
You can purchase an ESD protection kit from HP or from a local electronics store.
Before you unpack a replacement component, place the shipping container on an
antistatic table mat and attach the grounding clip on your wriststrap to the mat.
When you unpack a component, do not cut into the ESD protective bag
surrounding the component. The protective bag protects the component and can
be reused for storing a component.
Before you move a component from an antistatic table mat, attach the grounding
clip on your ESD wriststrap to any unpainted metal surface on the component
frame.
Before you bring a component in contact with a SWAN 2 concentrator rack, attach
the grounding clip on your ESD wriststrap to any unpainted metal surface on the
rack frame.
When you remove a component from a SWAN 2 concentrator rack, first pull the
component partway out of the slot and then attach the grounding clip on your ESD
wriststrap to any unpainted metal surface on the rack frame.
Store components that require ESD protection in ESD protective bags.
The following figure illustrates these guidelines.
