bits per second (bps)
bits per second (bps). The basic unit of measurement for data communications devices.
Usually refers to rate of information bits transmitted.
BOOTP. BOOTP is a protocol for providing initialization information to diskless nodes in an
open network. BOOTP is defined in RFC 951. The WANBoot process implements the
BOOTP protocol. See also WANBoot process.
BOOTP client. One BOOTP client (BOOTPC) is provided as a pSOS task in the essential
flash PROM on each CLIP in the SWAN concentrator. BOOTPC tasks are also
provided on the server system as the WANBoot process in the WAN subsystem. See
also communications line interface processor (CLIP), WAN subsystem SCF interface,
WANBoot process, Ethernet, and pSOS.
BOOTP daemon. The BOOTP daemon (BOOTPD) is the BOOTP server. One BOOTPD
server runs as a pSOS task in the essential flash PROM on each CLIP in the SWAN
concentrator. BOOTPD tasks are also provided on the server system as the WANBoot
process in the WAN subsystem. See also communications line interface processor
(CLIP), WAN subsystem SCF interface, WANBoot process, Ethernet, and pSOS.
byte. Eight bits of information.
byte-synchronous. A type of OSI Layer-2 protocol that uses synchronous transmission
techniques and requires a character code to define terminals and line control
sequences. Data is always transmitted in a block. See also Open Systems
Interconnection (OSI)
CAP/CLIP interface. The communications access process/communications line interface
processor (CAP/CLIP) interface is a set of procedures that process CAP/CLIP
messages. The CAP/CLIP interface procedures are called by the DLC tasks to pre-
process incoming messages from pNA and are also called as procedures to send
messages to pNA.
CAP/CLIP message. CAP/CLIP messages are used to transfer information between the
IOPs and the DLC tasks.
CCITT. Comité Consultatif International Télégraphique et Téléphonique or International
Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee. A standards-setting group for
international telephone carriers.
checksum. A technique for checking the validity of a multiple-byte block of data by
arithmetically adding all the bytes together to obtain a sum. If the sum does not match
the one that was previously computed, an error exists somewhere within the block of
data. Checksum generation is a standard task of an OSI Layer-2 protocol. See also
Open Systems Interconnection (OSI).
CLIP. See communications line interface processor (CLIP)
