Megabits per second (Mbps)
Megabits per second (Mbps). A data rate equal to 1,048,576 bits per second (bps).
MHz. Megahertz. One million cycles per second.
modem. A contraction of the words modulator/demodulator. A modem is a device for
performing necessary signal transformation between terminal devices and data
communications lines. Modems are used in pairs, one at either end of a data
communications line. See also data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE) and data
terminal equipment (DTE).
multiplexed. The action of separating data traffic from one line onto several distinct lines or
of combining data traffic from several distinct lines into one line.
nonessential flash PROM. The nonessential flash PROM consists of the power-on self-test
(POST), DLC tasks and their associated drivers and interface procedures, and DIAG
tasks. This code can be overwritten during flash updating without affecting the next
SWAN concentrator power on. See also essential flash PROM.
OSM. See HP Open System Management (OSM) Interface.
physical link interfaces. Physical link interfaces are described in documents produced by
standards organizations. The following definitions are supported for the SWAN
concentrator: RS-232, RS-449, RS-442, V.35, and X.21.
port. See WAN port.
RS-232. An industry standard for serial data transmission. It describes pin assignments,
signal functions, and electrical characteristics. The current standard specifies a 25-pin
connector.
RS-449. An industry standard for serial data transmission. It specifies pin assignments,
signal functions, electrical characteristics, and a 37-pin connector with an optional 9-
pin connector for a secondary channel.
SCF. See Subsystem Control Facility (SCF)
.
ServerNet wide area network (SWAN) concentrator. (1) An HP data communications
peripheral that provides connectivity to an HP NonStop S-series server. The SWAN
concentrator supports both synchronous and asynchronous data over RS-232,
RS-449, X.21, and V.35 electrical and physical interfaces. (2) A collective term for both
SWAN concentrators and SWAN 2 concentrators when a distinction between the two is
not required.
ServerNet wide area network (SWAN) 2 concentrator. An HP data communications
peripheral that provides connectivity to an HP NonStop S-series server. The SWAN 2
concentrator supports both synchronous and asynchronous data over RS-232,
RS-449, X.21, and V.35 electrical and physical interfaces. The SWAN 2 concentrator
is the next-generation SWAN concentrator and has 12 WAN ports.
