Introduction to the SWAN
Concentrator
This section provides a high-level overview of the architecture and components of the
ServerNet wide area network (SWAN) concentrator. Topics described in this section
include:
SWAN Concentrator Features
SWAN Concentrator Connections on page 1-4
WAN Ports and Communications Line Interface Processors (CLIPs) on page 1-8
SWAN Firmware File on page 1-9
SWAN Concentrator Features
The SWAN concentrator is a communications device that connects bit-synchronous,
byte-synchronous, and asynchronous devices to HP Integrity NonStop BladeSystems,
HP Integrity NonStop NS-series systems, and HP NonStop S-series systems. The
SWAN concentrator enables customers migrating from earlier NonStop S-series
systems to preserve their investment in legacy devices.
Each SWAN concentrator contains three communications line interface processors
(CLIPs) and each CLIP supports two serial ports. The resulting six lines can support
any combination of the following interfaces:
RS-232
RS-449
V.35
X.21
The SWAN concentrator connects to NonStop systems through the concentrator’s dual
10 Base-T Ethernet connections, which provide fault tolerance if an Ethernet link or
controller fails.
Note. For detailed information about the components of the SWAN concentrator and how they
relate to WAN subsystem configuration, refer to the WAN Subsystem Configuration and
Management Manual.
