System Management Considerations
System Image Tape (SIT)
DSM/SCM allows you to optionally create a system image tape (SIT) as an emergency
backup.
System Management Considerations
The following system management topics are presented to help you efficiently manage
the system configuration process:
Configuring Swap-File Space
The Kernel-Managed Swap Facility (KMSF) is the preferred method for managing
virtual memory using swap files for all D4x RVUs after D40.00 and for G-series RVUs.
You need to configure each processor with at least one kernel-managed swap file that
provides the swap facility needed by its processes. You can load your system using
the default swap files, but you should also configure additional swap files. You do not
want to risk halting your entire system when you run out of swap space.
The proper configuration and management of KMSF is critical to efficient operation of
your system. Refer to the Kernel-Managed Swap Facility (KMSF) Manual for
guidelines and instructions on configuring swap files.
Stopping and Restarting SYSGENR
Terminating a SYSGENR process before it has finished can result in an incomplete or
unusable set of operating system files. Because it is not possible to build a new
operating system from a partial set of files, you must restart SYSGENR (which means
Caution. You should perform a SIT load only in an emergency and on the advice of a service
provider.
A SIT load is a destructive function that erases all files on the system disk, including all
information in the system configuration database. You should maintain a recent backup of the
system configuration database because this information is not stored on the SIT.
If you perform a SIT load without also restoring the system configuration database, you must
reconfigure all system processes and peripherals that are created using SCF. Many additional
steps are also required to restore the system to working order. Contact your service provider
for more information.
