Comparing DISKGEN to BACKUP
that you must restart DSM/SCM) and let it run to completion to ensure that your
operating system file set is complete.
You can press the Break key to exit SYSGENR while it is running and use the terminal
for another purpose (for instance, using Peruse to monitor progress on the CONFLIST
file). To return to SYSGENR, type PAUSE at the prompt and press Enter.
SYSGENR displays a prompt for the next step when it has finished processing the
current step.
Comparing DISKGEN to BACKUP
If you run SYSGENR on the same system that is being generated, it is faster and
easier to use DISKGEN to copy the operating system files to disk than to restore
operating system files from a SIT.
If you run SYSGENR for a system that is connected to your system by an Expand
network, it is faster and easier to use DISKGEN to copy the operating system files to
the other system.
File Security Information
The following file security issues are relevant for G-series RVUs:
•
Only super-group users (255,n) can run SYSGENR.
•
The default file securities of operating system files are as follows:
°
The files listed in the FILES_TO_COPY_TO_NEW_SYSTEM entry of the
CONFTEXT file keep the same security they had on the previous system.
°
The file $SYSTEM.ZSYSDISC.SYSDISC is secured “----”.
°
All other files copied to disk or tape are secured “A-A-”.
•
You can view current file security settings by using the TACL FILEINFO or FUP
INFO command.
•
After creating the new version of the operating system, you can use the PARAM
SECURENUNU command to change the default file security settings of new
operating system files from “A-A-” to “NUNU.” This allows users other than the
super-group users (255,n) to read and execute the new operating system files.
•
After creating the new version of the operating system, you can use the FUP
SECURE command to restrict or permit file access by user group.
•
Only the super ID (255,255) can use the FUP LICENSE command to permit
nonprivileged users to run programs containing privileged code. Refer to the File
Utility Program (FUP) Reference Manual for information about the SECURE and
LICENSE commands, as well as a list and description of the levels of file security
available. However, as discussed in the Safeguard User’s Guide, you cannot use
FUP SECURE and FUP LICENSE on files protected by the Safeguard utility.
