Once a field mouse invited his friend
the house mouse to dine.
Not satisfied with the meal of barley and
wheat, the house mouse said to the field
mouse, "There are so many good things to
eat where I live! Come visit me." So the two
of them went to the house mouse's house,
where they found vegetables, fruits, dates,
honey and cheese. The field mouse
began to think that the house
mouse's life was really much better than his
own. But each time they began to eat,
a man would suddenly open the door
and the poor mice would have to jump into a
crack in the floor. Finally, the field mouse,
who was good and hungry by this time, said,
"Friend, stay here and eat to your heart's content--
.1 if you don't mind all the trouble and the danger.
.2 I'll stick to my wheat and barley, as long as
.3 I can live in peace and quiet."
