Considerations
The ALT command takes effect on every other output page.
With the POFF command, you set a left margin for both even-numbered and
odd-numbered pages. Using the ALT command, you get additional spaces only
for the odd-numbered pages.
If you set the page number in the SECT command to 0, it suppresses the page-
numbering process. With the page numbers suppressed, the ALT command
without the ALWAYS options does not recognize even and odd pages, because it
does not count the pages. Therefore, the headings remain on the right side of the
page, and no additional spaces are added to the left margin. With the ALWAYS
option, the ALT command always counts the pages. Therefore, the headings print
on alternating sides of the page, and any additional spaces are added to the left
margin on every page.
If you do not use this command, TGAL assumes:
ALT OFF
Example
In this example, the POFF command sets the margin, and the ALT command adds
5 extra spaces to allow for the gutter on the page. Notice the positions of the heading,
subheading, and footing. If you enter:
\POFF 5;ALT ON 5
