disabled audited volume
disabled audited volume. An audited volume that is exempt from TMF processing. The
volume continues to be available for operations other than audited requests, and TMF
continues to process transactions for other audited volumes. An audited volume that is
disabled is not automatically enabled for TMF processing when TMF is restarted.
disk media failure. The failure of disk media to retain stored data; examples are
unreadable sectors or damaged disk surfaces.
distributed database. A database whose objects reside on more than one system in a
network of systems and whose objects can be accessed from any system in the
network.
distributed transaction. A transaction that accesses data located at multiple nodes of a
network, or one that accesses data by means of requesters or servers at multiple
nodes of a network.
DNS (Domain Name System). The Domain Name System (DNS) defines a hierarchical, yet
distributed, database of information pertaining to service addresses on a network. The
network administrator configures the DNS with a list of host names and IP addresses,
allowing users of workstations configured to query the DNS to specify remote systems
or services by host names rather than IP addresses. For example, a workstation
configured to use DNS name resolution can use the command “ping remotehost”
rather than “ping 1.2.3.4” if the mapping for the server named remotehost is contained
in the DNS database. DNS domains should not be confused with Windows NT
networking domains. The DNS service runs on a DNS server.
dump. See online backup, offline backup, and audit dump.
dump serial number. A unique serial number assigned to an online or audit dump.
E
EMS log. A file or set of files maintained by the Event Management Service to store event
messages generated by subsystems, including TMF.
enabled audited volume. An audited disk volume that is in its normal condition as a
configured audited volume (that is, an audited volume that has not been explicitly
disabled). TMF attempts to start an enabled audited volume for transaction processing
whenever the volume is accessible.
Enscribe database record manager. A relational database record management system
that provides a record-at-a-time interface between servers and a distributed database.

Event Management Service (EMS). A software product that collects event messages from
reporting processes and subsystems (including TMF) and then selectively distributes
those messages to various destinations, ranging from a local operator console device
to a management application running on a remote system.
