Reentering Deleted Dumps
Reentering Deleted Dumps
You use the ADD DUMPS command to reenter online dump and audit dump entries
that were mistakenly deleted from the TMF catalog or to recover a destroyed TMF
catalog.
You should use the ADD DUMPS command only under the following circumstances:
•
A file was mistakenly purged, causing the dump entry to be deleted.
•
Dump entries in the TMF catalog were mistakenly deleted by a DELETE DUMPS,
DELETE TAPEMEDIA, ALTER DUMPS, or ALTER TAPEMEDIA command, but the
tape or disk medium is still physically available and valid.
•
The AUDIT attribute of a file was mistakenly altered to NO, and the online dump
entry for the file was deleted from the TMF catalog.
•
The TMF configuration subvolume was lost and the TMF catalog was partially
restored from an earlier backup tape (use the ADD DUMPS command to reenter
any entries that were made since the backup was done).
Adding Dump Entries Through Command Files
As noted in the directions for making online dumps described in Section 5, Online
Dumps, the easiest way to re-enter dumps into the catalog is through the use of
command files. At frequent intervals, use the INFO DUMPS, OBEYFORM command
provided by TMFCOM to create a command file for re-adding the dump entries. This
command reads the audit and online dump entries in the TMF catalog and creates a
command file containing TMFCOM ADD DUMPS commands referencing those dump
entries. If you save this file, you can use it later to collectively re-add the entries to the
Note. The ADD DUMPS command only re-creates entries in the TMF catalog, it does not re-
create actual lost or damaged dumps themselves. The dump entries are only effective if the
dumps they describe actually exist on available media. That is, a dump to tape must remain
on a tape that has not been overwritten; a dump to disk must have been restored from backup
disk files.
HP recommends that you use output from a previous INFO DUMPS, OBEYFORM command
as input for executing ADD DUMPS commands. The INFO DUMPS, OBEYFORM command
formats online and audit-dump entries from the TMF catalog as command file text that can be
saved and executed later by TMFCOM. If you periodically issue the INFO DUMPS,
OBEYFORM command, you can readily capture up-to-date information for rebuilding the
entries in the TMF catalog. For more information about this approach, see the discussion of
the INFO DUMPS command in the TMF Reference Manual.
Caution. If both of the mirrored disks on which the TMF configuration subvolume specified in
the $SYSTEM.ZTMFCONF.CONFVOL file resides become unreadable, call the Global
Customer Support Center (GCSC) or your service provider.
When requesting multiple copies of a dump, always specify the part numbers of both copies in
your ADD DUMPS command, to ensure that the dump information is added to the TMF catalog
correctly.
