Why Audit-Trail Files Stay Pinned on a Volume
Why Audit-Trail Files Stay Pinned on a Volume
In the STATUS AUDITTRAIL display, the line labeled, “First pinned file:” refers to the
oldest audit-trail file that cannot yet be reused or purged from the active or overflow-
audit volume. There is always at least one active audit-trail file on disk, so the status
display always shows a file name on this line. The display also shows the reason that
the file is pinned; these are described next.
Reason: Active transaction(s)
Meaning. An active transaction may have sent an audit record to this audit-trail file.
The audit-trail file remains on the active or overflow-audit volume in case the
transaction aborts, in which case the file will be needed by the backout process.
Action. Use the STATUS TRANSACTIONS command to see the status of all
transactions. If a transaction remains in the active, aborting, or hung state, you may
have to back it out manually. See Controlling Individual Transactions on page 3-20.
If the transaction is active and you do not want to abort it, check the STATUS TMF
display to see if the audit trail is nearing the begin-transaction-disable threshold; if it is,
consider increasing the audit-trail capacity, as described in Responding to Audit-Trail
Overflow on page 3-5.
If the problem persists, check the EMS log to see if the backout process has reported
any errors while undoing the transaction.
See “Maintaining Transactions” and “Viewing EMS Messages,” later in this section.
Reason: Current file
Meaning. This audit-trail file is currently receiving audit records.
Action. No action is required.
Reason. Might be needed to recover datavol volume-name
volume
Meaning. This audit-trail file contains audit records that may be needed by the volume
recovery process to reapply transactions to the specified data volume. The file is kept
on the active or overflow-audit volume so that if volume recovery is needed, the audit-
trail file does not have to be restored from archive media: this means that the data
volume’s recovery mode is configured as ONLINE.
Action. Use the STATUS DATAVOLS command to make sure the data volume is
started for transaction processing.
If the audit trail is reaching overflow capacity, you can use the ALTER DATAVOLS
command to change the recovery mode for the data volume to ARCHIVE. This
change releases the audit-trail files needed by the data volume for volume recovery: if
volume recovery is needed, it will probably require audit records stored on audit dump
