5 Online Dumps
Online dumps are copies of audited files on tape or disk. These dumps preserve
audited files for use by the file recovery process. If your database is damaged, the file
recovery process restores the online dump files to disk and uses audit trail files to
reconstruct the database. This section explains how to prepare for and make online
dumps, and covers these topics:
You can use the TMFCOM command interface to perform online dumps, as illustrated
by the procedures described in this guide.
Maintaining Online Dumps
Your system manager establishes the procedures for managing online dumps.
Specifically, the system manager decides:
•
How often to make online dumps
•
Which audited files to dump
•
The most convenient and efficient times to perform online dumps
•
How many online dump generations to keep
To learn about managing online dumps, see the TMF Planning and Configuration
Guide.
Your role in maintaining online dumps is to prepare dump media and perform the
dumps according to the schedule established by the system manager.
Use the INFO DUMPS and INFO TAPEMEDIA commands to see dump media
information recorded in the TMF catalog. The TMF catalog contains information about
all dumps needed by TMF recovery processes, and about dump media available for
reuse.
The INFO DUMPS command is useful if you need to know which tape or disk contains
a specific file, when the dumps were performed, or dump serial numbers. Both the
INFO DUMPS and INFO TAPEMEDIA commands report the names of the tape and
disk media used for TMF dumps, the media type (tape or disk), and the media status
(assigned, released, scratch, or invalid).
See Section 6, The TMF Catalog, or the TMF Reference Manual for more information
on using commands for viewing and changing the TMF catalog.
