3 Occasional Operations
This section describes how to perform TMF operations that are needed only
periodically; they are not considered part of routine TMF maintenance. In this section,
the following topics appear:
You can use the TMFCOM command interface to perform TMF maintenance, as
illustrated by the procedures described in this guide.
Starting TMF
Once TMF is started on your system for the first time, it normally runs until a
maintenance operation or problem on the system requires you to stop it. Restart TMF
by issuing the START TMF command. This command starts transaction processing,
data volumes, and the catalog process. You must be a member of the super user
group to issue this command.
You can prevent transaction processing from starting when you issue the START TMF
command by using the DISABLE BEGINTRANS option; you can later use the ENABLE
BEGINTRANS command to allow transactions to start. See Controlling Transaction
Processing on page 3-16 for more information.
The transaction management process (TMP) displays a series of TMF event messages
while the START TMF command is executing. Many of these messages report the
status (starting or started) of the primary processes for individual components of the
TMP; such messages can help in analyzing problems that might occur during TMF
startup. If volume recovery is initiated during TMF startup, the volume-recovery events
are shown among the event messages. You can use the NOWAIT option of the
START TMF command to prevent the TMF event messages from displaying. The
messages are saved in the EMS log, where you can view them later.
