Solving Audit Dump Problems
No operator intervention is required to process a disk dump. If an audit dump to disk
fails, the audit dump’s temporary file is not written to disk and the process is tried
again.
Solving Audit Dump Problems
The most common causes of audit dump problems are:
•
Incorrect tapes mounted
•
Damaged tapes
•
Problems on the audit-trail volume
•
File system errors
•
Tape drive or disk drive errors
These problems generate EMS messages to notify you that the audit dump is not
progressing normally. There are some basic actions you can take to correct these
problems, as summarized in Table 4-2.
For a complete list of TMF EMS messages, see the Operator Messages Manual.
Table 4-2. Audit Dump Problems and Basic Solutions
Problem Action
Incorrect tapes
mounted
Make sure a TMF-labeled scratch tape is mounted on the tape
drive.
Damaged tapes Either mount another TMF-labeled scratch tape or relabel the
damaged tape, if possible.
Problems on the
audit- trail volume
Use the STATUS AUDITTRAIL command to make sure the audit-
trail volume containing the file to be dumped is running.
File system errors See the Operator Messages Manual to find the recovery method
recommended for the file system error reported in the message.
Tape drive or disk
drive errors
Use the ALTER AUDITDUMP command to direct dumps to a
working tape or disk drive, if there is an extra drive available. It is
not necessary to use the same dump media; you can easily switch
from tape to disk media (or vice versa) temporarily if the usual
dump media is unavailable due to errors. Otherwise, disable audit
dumping until the drive can be repaired.
Note. If tape errors occur during dumps, the TMF catalog (through the TMFDR process)
marks the associated tape volume released, even if the catalog is configured to mark reusable
tape volumes as scratch. An unexpectedly high number of released tape volumes may
indicate that you have damaged tapes. Check the EMS log for archive tape OPEN or WRITE
errors. See Section 6, The TMF Catalog
, for more information about the TMF catalog.
