DUMP FILES
Online Dumps to Disk
Online dumps can span disk volumes. These dumps are recorded in large files, called
“disk dump files,” on the disks that are specified with the DISKMEDIA option. There
must be enough cumulative space available on all of the specified disks to hold the
online dumps.
For maximum protection, store your online dumps on disks other than those containing
the files being dumped.
Store different generations of online dumps on different sets of disks.
When the disk specified with the DISKMEDIA option is on a remote node, volume
must not exceed seven characters, counting the leading dollar sign ($).
If online dumps are recorded on nonmirrored disks, the RETAINDEPTH option of the
ALTER CATALOG command should be set greater than 1 so that file recovery is still
possible even if one of the disks cannot be read because of a media failure.
An online dump to disk fails if the SAFEGUARD subsystem’s DEFAULT-PROTECTION
option is configured for your user ID. To avoid this situation, request the online dump
under a user ID for which DEFAULT-PROTECTION is not configured.
Online Dumps to Tape
All tapes used in a dump operation must be labeled tapes defined in the TMF catalog.
Each tape is identified by the name previously assigned in the tape-volume
parameter of the ADD TAPEMEDIA command, which inserts the name into the
magnetically encoded label on the tape volume and enters this name for the volume in
the catalog. For example, if tmf011 is specified in the tape-volume parameter,
tmf011 is written in the label and recorded in the catalog as the tape-volume name.
In the DUMP FILES command, the TAPEMEDIA parameter allows you to specify, by
volume name, a particular tape or set of tapes to be used as the dump destination.
(For instance, you can specify the volume named tmf011 for this purpose.)
If the TAPEMEDIA parameter is included in the DUMP FILES command, the
following actions take place:
If the tape volume specified in TAPEMEDIA is presently mounted, TMF uses
this tape for the dump.
If the tape volume specified in TAPEMEDIA is not presently mounted, the tape-
handling software determines whether any other TMF scratch tape volumes
defined in the TMF catalog are mounted. If a scratch tape volume is found,
TMF uses that volume. However, if no TMF scratch tape volumes are
mounted, TMF requests the operator to mount the volume specified in
TAPEMEDIA; if the operator responds by mounting that volume or any other
volume defined as a scratch tape in the TMF catalog, the volume mounted will
be used.
