RECOVER FILES
after the dump would be impossible. In such a case, you can use the
TOMATPOSITION option to recover the database to a specific location within the
master audit trail (MAT) rather than to a specific time. However, the recovery steps
involve the use of the SNOOP utility, a high level of TMF background, and perhaps the
assistance of the Global Customer Support Center (GCSC) or your service provider.
For more information about the procedure, see TMF Operations and Recovery Guide.
TOMATPOSITION Option Considerations
The TOMATPOSITION option applies only to the MAT, not to the auxiliary audit trails.
The TOMATPOSITION option is also used to support the takeover operation available
with the NonStop RDF product, as described in RDF/IMP, IMPX , and ZLT System
Management Manual.
Specifying the incorrect TOMATPOSTION location has the same effect as specifying
the incorrect TIME value: the data files recovered will be consistent among
themselves, but they might not be consistent with the other data files on the system.
When you specify the TOMATPOSITION option, the most recent valid online dump is
used for recovery. If the TOMATPOSITION value specifies a relative byte address
(rba) written before the rba where this online dump completed, file recovery fails after
the dump is restored and EMS message 179 is generated:
The Audit Trail sequence number or the RBA is too low for the
online dump that is being recovered:
atseqno atseqno RBA rba.
To recover to an rba written before the most recent valid online dump completed, you
must first invalidate the online dumps that occurred after that location, by using the
ALTER DUMPS command with the INVALID ON option. If all the files you wish to
recover are from a single online dump, you can use the SERIAL option of the
RECOVER FILES command instead of invalidating all the later online dumps
Under very unusual circumstances, file recovery with the TOMATPOSITION option
may report that files were recovered when in fact they were not. If the
TOMATPOSITION value specified an rba that was written immediately before the most
recent online dump completed, the file recovery process may not detect the invalid
location. To avoid this problem, specify only TOMATPOSITION rbas that occur after
the most recent valid online dump was completed.
MAP NAMES Option Considerations
The MAP NAMES option allows you to recover files to different volumes, subvolumes,
and file IDs than the ones from which they were dumped.
In addition to performing production file recovery with MAP NAMES, you can use this
option to practice or rehearse file recovery without actually overwriting existing data.
Furthermore, MAP NAMES gives you an alternative way to replicate data by using a
second copy of your file sets.
