DUMP FILES
If you specify COPIES 1, specifying RETAINDEPTH 3 (or higher) in the ALTER
CATALOG command is recommended. If you specify COPIES 2, specifying
RETAINDEPTH 2 (or higher) in the ALTER CATALOG command is recommended.
Even if none of the copies of the online dump can be read, you can use an earlier
dump generation for file recovery.
If the first tape mounted in response to a tape-mount request is write-protected, TMF
does not invoke the automatic volume-recognition (AVR) feature with successive
tapes. This is particularly troublesome when multiple TMF scratch tapes have been
pre-mounted on a multi-tape device; in such a case, all remaining scratch tapes will be
rejected and unloaded. Always verify that pre-mounted TMF scratch tapes are not
write-protected.
If TMF encounters an error when writing a dump to tape, the tape’s status in the TMF
catalog is changed from SCRATCH to RELEASED regardless of whether the
RELEASED parameter for the catalog is set to ON or OFF. RELEASED status
indicates that something may be wrong with the tape and helps prevent operators from
repeatedly mounting a bad tape.
Output Displayed
When the DUMP FILES command is executed, TMFCOM displays an online report
that includes the items listed in Table 3-6.
Examples
The following DUMP FILES command dumps the files in the subvolume
$DATA3.ZTMFDATA to the volume $DATA4 on the local system \COMMIT, assigning
YC as the prefix in the online dump name:
TMF 35> DUMP FILES $DATA3.ZTMFDATA.*, DISKMEDIA $DATA4.YC
