Introduction to the Guardian TN3270
Server
The Guardian TN3270 Server is a Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP) service that acts as a Guardian 3270 access method. It allows workstations
running the public-domain TN3270 client to access 3270 block-mode or conversational
applications residing on Tandem. These applications include Pathway, TACL, TEDIT,
and PSMAIL/3270.
Features
The Guardian TN3270 Server:
•
Is fully compatible with Distributed System Management (DSM).
•
Supports a Subsystem Programmatic Interface (SPI) for command and control.
•
Logs all events to the Event Management Service (EMS), including session
establishment and termination.
•
Provides a full trace facility, including a trace formatter.
•
Is compatible with EM3270.
•
Has an application interface that can be configured to emulate either AM3270 or
SNAX/XF.
•
Supports translation of national language character sets (NLS).
•
Supports Kanji for CRT mode applications.
Guardian TN3270 Server runs as a subtype 30 process and emulates the AM3270
application interface by default. Because the SNAX/XF mode runs a more efficient two-
step read and supports richer 3270 features, SNAX/XF mode is recommended for
everyone running Pathway or another application that supports SNAX/XF.
Guardian TN3270 Server returns to Tandem applications calling DEVICEINFO, a
device type and subtype corresponding to its configuration. The device type returned
depends on the current screen protocol of block (CRT) protocol or interactive terminal
interface (ITI) protocol. The subtype returned depends on the terminal type negotiated
during Telnet option negotiation and on the application interface mode (AM3270 or
SNAX/XF). If DEVICEINFO is called before option negotiation has completed,
Guardian TN3270 Server returns the type and subtype for an IBM 3278-2 for the
application interface specified at startup. Section A, Terminal Models
lists terminal
models recognized, and the corresponding device types.
Note. Tandem cannot ensure that Guardian TN3270 Server will work correctly with all TN3270
clients or that it will continue to work with new releases of other vendors’ hardware and
software.
