TRANSFER Operation
Introduction
1–4 40591 Tandem Computers Incorporated
TRANSFER is reliable, flexible, and convenient. The sender can specify when
information is to be delivered. Delivery of information is assured; each recipient
receives the information and receives it only once. The content and format of the
information that is transmitted is strictly up to the sender; TRANSFER is concerned
only with the transmittal of the information.
TRANSFER Clients Correspondents interact with TRANSFER through its clients, the requester programs
that provide the interface between correspondents and TRANSFER. Every
TRANSFER application requires at least one client. PS MAIL 6530, PS MAIL 3270, PS
MAIL TTY, and the ADMIN and TMANAGER programs are all TRANSFER clients.
A TRANSFER correspondent can group items into a package defined by the
TRANSFER client the correspondent is using. The correspondent then sends the
package for delivery to specified recipients.
After a correspondent has sent a package, TRANSFER is responsible for seeing that
each local, remote, or foreign recipient receives it. At each Tandem node, a
TRANSFER scheduler keeps track of packages to ensure that they are scheduled for
delivery.
When packages have been scheduled for delivery, TRANSFER asynchronous
requesters see that packages are actually delivered to each Tandem recipient. If a
package cannot be delivered, the sender is notified of the failure to deliver to that
recipient.
Agents A recipient has the option of defining one or more agents to act on incoming packages.
Agents are SCREEN COBOL programs or PATHWAY server classes that are
automatically invoked to handle packages received at a depot. Multiple agents can be
assigned to a depot to take different actions for different types of packages. The same
agent can be assigned to more than one depot.
Profiles, Folders, and
Distribution Lists
TRANSFER maintains a database that includes definitions of the various objects
belonging to a correspondent. Each correspondent has one depot, which includes that
correspondent's profiles, folders, and distribution lists:
Profiles are the correspondent attributes stored in a depot. Profiles contain
information used by the TRANSFER delivery system and its agents and clients.
The TRANSFER depot profile includes standard information about the
correspondent, such as a password and default delivery information.
Client profiles include information used by the TRANSFER clients for the
correspondent, such as the names of default formatter and editor programs.
An agent profile includes selection criteria for each agent assigned to the
depot.
User-defined profiles include information about the correspondent for
programs designed by Tandem users.
