Glossary

Agent. A program that automatically handles messages delivered to a correspondent's
INBOX folder. (Your system manager can explain whether an agent is written in
SCREEN COBOL or in another application language that needs to have a server class
configured in the PATHWAY system.)
Client. A requester program that provides the interface between correspondents and
the TRANSFER delivery system. PS MAIL 6530, PS MAIL 3270, PS MAIL TTY, and
ADMIN are all TRANSFER clients.
Configuration period. A period of statistics collection by the depot statistics facility. This
term refers to the period of time for which statistics configuration parameters remain
constant. A new configuration period begins when the system manager changes any
of the parameters on the DEPOT STATISTICS CONFIGURATION screen and then
runs XCOOL (a TRANSFER startup program). The concept of the configuration
period is the key to understanding the boundaries between current and old statistics.
Component. An item added to a TRANSFER package.
Correspondent. A sender and/or receiver of information within the TRANSFER system.
A correspondent can be a person, process, or device.
Depot. That part of the TRANSFER database that is associated with a particular
correspondent or interest group. It can be compared to a post office box that you
rent—you hold the key, but system administrators, like postal authorities, have certain
access. A private depot is privately owned by an individual correspondent, and a
group depot is shared among all the correspondents belonging to the interest group
associated with that depot. A depot includes the profiles, folders, and distribution lists
that belong to the correspondent or the interest group.
Depot owner. The user or interest group for whom a depot is created.
Depot storage statistic. The byte count of data stored in a depot. This data includes item
data, external objects, and distribution list records. The storage statistic can reflect a
current or a past storage amount for the depot.
Depot statistics facility. The TRANSFER function that configures, computes, collects,
stores, and accesses statistics of item, folder, and depot storage.
Distribution lists. Predefined lists of recipients for packages. A distribution list, which
provides a simple method of sending a package to multiple destinations, belongs to
the correspondent who creates it; however, any correspondent can use a distribution
list.
Distribution list records. TRANSFER records that contain the distribution lists defined by
correspondents.
Electronic bulletin board. An folder that is accessible to the members of an interest group.
Group members can read items in the bulletin board and save items to the bulletin
board for other members to read.
External object. An object outside of the TRANSFER database (such as a PC text file)
that can still be accessed and used by TRANSFER.
