Glossary
40591 Tandem Computers Incorporated Glossary–3
Node. A Tandem computer system that is part of a Tandem network; in ADMIN it
refers to a system on which TRANSFER is installed.
Package. A collection of information that can be sent from one correspondent or
interest group to other correspondents and interest groups.
Pattern. A partial name that you type when requesting a list of names of
correspondents, interest groups, folders, or distribution lists. You can type one or
more asterisks (*) to indicate where in the name any character may appear. Only those
names matching the pattern are listed. A pattern is like a wild-card name, but it does
not have to identify a unique name.
Posting. Submitting a message for delivery by TRANSFER.
Private folder or distribution list. Folder or distribution list that is created, owned, and
managed by an individual correspondent.
Profile. A collection of attributes that describes an individual or group depot or the
system as a whole. In TRANSFER the attributes of the depot specified in the
correspondent or interest group profile are limited by the attributes that control the
system.
PUBLIC group. An interest group containing all correspondents defined on a given
node of a TRANSFER system. New correspondents are, by default, members of the
PUBLIC group and have shared access to PUBLIC folders and distribution lists.
Session. The period between the time a correspondent logs on and begins
communicating with TRANSFER and the time the correspondent logs off and ends
that communication.
Shared folder or distribution list. A shared folder or distribution list is the same as a group
folder or distribution list; that is, these shared items are used by the members of an
interest group or by any member of the PUBLIC group. See the definition for interest
group.
System administrative write privileges. Special privileges granted to one or more users on
each node of a system to allow that user to use ADMIN to register other
correspondents; add or delete correspondents, interest groups, folders, and
distribution lists; and read and modify many of the attributes of these same objects.
System administrator. A collective term used in this manual to refer to any
correspondent who has system administrative write privileges. These correspondents
are usually TRANSFER system administrators or the system manager for a
TRANSFER node.
TRANSFER. A high-level software product that supports communications between
people, input-output devices, and processes.
TRANSFER name directory. A list of names of all correspondents, interest groups,
distribution lists, and folders at a local node. TRANSFER uses this list whenever a
correspondent types a local name.
TRANSFER system manager. The person responsible for setting up, monitoring, and
controlling TRANSFER at a node.
