Interest Group Special Characteristics
Like correspondents, interest groups can be members of other interest groups or
members of distribution lists. There are, however, certain important differences
between an individual correspondent depot and group depots. These are:
Correspondents can define interest groups if the relevant flag is set in the ADMIN
SYSTEM CONTROL screen. See your system manager to find out whether only
system administrators or any correspondent on your node can create an interest
group.
Two distribution lists are created automatically for interest groups: MEMBERS
and ADMIN. The MEMBERS distribution list contains the names of all the group
members. The ADMIN list contains the name of the group creator and the names
of all group administrators.
Interest group administrators are group members designated as administrators
on the members list when the interest group is created. See the INTEREST
GROUP MEMBERS screen in this section.
Only system administrators, group creators, or group administrators can create
folders or distribution lists for a group unless the group's profile is configured to
allow any member to define these objects.
You cannot log on to a group depot; that is, you cannot log on to TRANSFER
using a group name. Depending on your privileges, you access a group's
objects—folders, packages, distribution lists—by specifying them from your own
correspondent depot. As an example, a correspondent using the TRANSFER
client PS MAIL 6530 can display a folder for a group by specifying, on the options
line of the PS MAIL MAIN MENU:
group.foldername
where
group
is the name of the group, and
foldername
is the name of the
folder. If the correspondent is a member of the group, he or she can then examine
the folder's contents.
Because no one can log on to a group depot, a group cannot send packages.
You can send a package to a group depot or to the individual members of a group.
That is:
Designate the group name as the recipient of the package. All group members
can see the package by looking through the folder in which the package is
filed.
Use the MEMBERS distribution list that is automatically created for the group
when the group is defined. Each group member receives the package in the
INBOX at his or her own depot when you send a package to
group
.MEMBERS
where
group
is the name of the group.
