Configuring the
Parameters for
System Control
As system manager with administrative write privileges, you can control the following
actions of your TRANSFER delivery system from the SYSTEM CONTROL screen. A
user application can also call a UOW (unit-of-work) to set or change the parameters.
The TRANSFER Programming Guide discusses these UOWs.
Controlling Delivery Time
You can specify the time limits for delivery of messages sent from your node.
The default delivery window and the expiration window for a package sent by a
correspondent are set in that correspondent’s TRANSFER profile. All Tandem mail
clients use these default values. As explained in the TRANSFER Administration Guide,
Volume 1: Reference Manual, a user-supplied client can override the default values. In
either case, the delivery and expiration windows must be within the limits set here for
TRANSFER system control.
You can set the following delivery time limits on the SYSTEM CONTROL screen:
Maximum package lifespan
Maximum lifespan of a package refers to the length of time that TRANSFER
monitors the package. If the expiration time is greater than 0, the maximum
lifespan is from the time that delivery begins until the scheduled expiration. If the
expiration time is 0, the lifespan is the same as the delivery window. Expiration
does not affect package delivery. The maximum package lifespan can be from 1
through 9999 M (minutes), H (hours), or D (days). The TRANSFER default is 1000
days.
Minimum delivery window
The minimum period of time for delivering a message sent can be from 1 through
9999 M (minutes), H (hours), or D (days). The TRANSFER default is five minutes.
If a message sent from your node has a delivery window smaller than the
minimum delivery window, TRANSFER automatically increases it to the system
control limit.
Minimum expiration window
The expiration window is the length of time from the latest possible delivery of a
message to its scheduled expiration. If a message sent from your node has an
expiration window smaller than this, TRANSFER automatically increases it to the
system control limit. This field applies only to messages scheduled for expiration.
The value can be from 1 through 9999, followed by M (minutes), H (hours), or D
(days). The TRANSFER default is one hour.
The sum of the delivery window and the expiration window values cannot exceed the
value of the package lifespan value.
Note By setting the Minimum delivery window and the Minimum expiration window larger than you need to, you
increase the entries in the TIME file and cause packages to remain in the system longer than is efficient.
