Statistics
TRANSFER can collect statistics telling you how much storage is being used for each
depot on the system. These depot storage statistics provide important information for
both individual correspondents and system managers; for example:
Correspondents can use them to decide how to use their depots efficiently.
Administrators can use them to charge correspondents for the data they are
saving.
Analysts can use them to track trends in the information stored.
System managers can use them as guides in setting TRANSFER policy.
Overview The depot statistics facility takes a snapshot of the amount of disk storage in a depot at
a specific time, providing a byte count of the following:
Item data
An item includes all the data records of an item as well as all its component items
and attachments. In other words, an item refers to all the information in that
item’s tree. The client application defines what is saved as item data.
External objects
An external object, although outside the TRANSFER database, can be accessed and
used by TRANSFER. These external objects are attached to items.
Distribution-list records
Distribution-list records contain the membership of distribution lists created by
correspondents.
Byte counts for each of these three are stored separately; together, they represent a
depot storage statistic. Data that TRANSFER uses to operate—the file size of the
Name Directory, for example—is not included in storage statistics.
Statistics for external objects might not always exactly reflect the depot storage because
the owner of an external object can change the external object outside the TRANSFER
environment. The change in the size of that external object does not change an already
computed storage statistic.
Statistic Sampling Every instance of item data and of an external object in a depot is accounted for in a
statistic (except when you specify that you do not want standard item counting).
You can specify whether you want to maintain one or more samples of statistics as
follows:
The statistics facility can collect current storage statistics only. As a depot’s
storage changes, the current storage statistic recorded for the depot changes
concurrently.
The statistics facility can both collect current statistics and keep a record of these
statistics over time. These accumulated statistics are stored in a TRANSFER file
called the DEPSTAT file.
