11 Managing a TRANSFER System

Overview Once the TRANSFER delivery system is running, you want to check TRANSFER to
ensure that the system is operating smoothly. Several Tandem software products are
used to control and monitor TRANSFER and your TRANSFER applications.
System Control To control the TRANSFER delivery system you need to establish rules for running
TRANSFER and to solve problems as they arise. If TRANSFER is running in a
network, coordination between system managers at the various nodes is essential to
configuring a smoothly operating system. The following paragraphs provide some
guidelines for controlling your TRANSFER system.
Correspondent Names Establish conventions for selecting correspondent names. If TRANSFER is running in
a network, confer with the other system managers to ensure that the same naming
conventions are used at all nodes in the network. Using a consistent naming
convention reduces the necessity of looking up a correspondent name before using the
name as a recipient of a package. Consider the following recommendations when
setting up naming conventions:
The hyphen and the underscore are not interchangeable; select one of these
characters to separate specific parts of correspondent names.
When correspondents are people, register all names in the same order; for
example:
lastname-firstname-initial
If correspondent names are used to represent functional positions, the identity of
the logged-on correspondent becomes lost.
Because you usually refer to a functional position as a package recipient, create a
distribution list to represent the function. For example, instead of registering the
correspondent name SALES-MANAGERS, maintain a distribution list named
SALES-MANAGERS with all your current sales managers named as members of
that distribution list.
If you set up an interest group named SALES-MANAGERS with all sales
managers as members of the group, you can address the group as a whole by
using the recipient name SALES-MANAGERS, or you can address each member
individually by using the automatically maintained group distribution list,
SALES-MANAGERS.MEMBERS.
